Capability Enhancement in Powder X-Ray Diffraction and Rietveld Refinement Analysis
The workshop on “Capability Enhancement in Powder X-Ray Diffraction and RietveldRefinement Analysis “was held in Abdul Kalam Research Center, Sacred Heart College during 30-31 January 2020in collaboration with Bruker India Scientific Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore. During the inaugural function, Dr.S.R.XavierRajarathinam, the Vice Principal (Academic), urged the students to make use of the occasion to learn the basics of X-ray Diffraction as it would be very useful for them to write their M.Sc., projects with in-depth discussion.
The first day (30 January 2020) was attended by the final year M.Sc Chemistry and Physics students along with M.Phil and Ph.D scholars. The resource person Dr. RavikumarIyyemperumal, Application Scientist, Bruker India Scientific Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore gave them a practical session on how to collect data from the Powder X-Ray Diffractometer followed by teaching them the nitty-gritty of X-Ray diffraction from historical perspective. During the second session, he elaborated on the basics of X-Ray diffraction, Crystal structures, the uses and the methods of analysis of data.
The second day (31 January 2020) was attended by as many as thirty two external participants including Research Scholars and faculty members from ten different colleges and universities. Among other participants were the Ph.D. and M.Phil. scholars of Sacred Heart College. After a brief session on basics of X-ray Diffraction and how to collect data from the XRD machine, the Resource person discussed elaborately about Rietveld Refinement Analysis using TOPAS software. These sessions included Introduction to TOPAS, Profile fitting-Single line and full pattern Analysis, Microstructure Analysis, Crystalite size and strains, Introduction to Rietveld method, Exercise on multiple phase quantification, Quantification of amorphous content, Indexing and Rietveld structure refinement.
During the valediction, Dr.S.A.MartinBrittoDhas, Assistant professor, Department of Physics welcomed the gathering. Rev.Dr.K.A.MariaArokiaraj SDB, the Additional Principal highly appreciated the Resource person and the participants and gave away participation certificates to the participants. Dr. M.Jose, Dean of Research and Convener expressed his gratitude to the Management for their encouragement and motivation and thanked the co-convener Mr. D.Rajkumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics and the Resource person for keeping the sessions lively throughout the two days.
