On 15th August, 2021, Sacred Heart College celebrated the nation’s 75th Independence Day. The occasion was graced by Rev. Dr. John Alex, SDB, the Rector and Secretary of the college, Rev. Dr. D. Maria Antonyraj, SDB, the Principal of Sacred Heart College, Rev. Dr. Praveen Peter, SDB, Vice Principal, Shift-I, Rev. Dr. G. Theophil Anand, SDB, Vice Principal, Shift-II, Rev. Fr. S. Henry Daniel Ambrose Director, Extension Education & Services, Rev. Fr. Sathinathan Thomas, Administrator, Rev. Dr. Gandhi Kallarasan, Campus Minister,  the Heads of the Departments, Deans, teaching and non-teaching staff, and students.

 Lieutenant, Dr. K. Sivakumar, welcomed the gathering and led the contingent drill of the cadets. The Indian Tricolour Flag was hoisted in the college grounds at 9.00 a.m. by Rev. Fr. Peter Rajamanikam, SDB, Spiritual Director, MHOC Church, Tirupattur. Rev. Dr. Praveen Peter,  the Vice-Principal, Shift – I, introduced the chief guests and honoured them with mementos.

Rev.Dr. D. Maria Antonyraj, the principal, in his Independence Day message said that, ‘HOPE’ has united us in spite of this pandemic. As citizens, we need to build on this Hope to make our country a better nation. The 2021 Olympics in Tokyo has proven to the world our strength. Just like cricket, we should nurture our youth to take part in other games also. Further, he stated that the younger generation should not be tied up to online games and social media. They should become responsible citizens in safe guarding our freedom. He urged everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible, so that we can return to normal life and ensure that no student is deprived of quality education.  

The Chief Guests, Rev.Fr. Charles Stephen, SDB, Rector and Parish Priest, Sacred Heart Church, Thennagudi, Karraikal, delivered the Independence Day message. Rev.Fr. Vincent Maria Pragasam, SDB, Director, DB Young at Risk Services, Chennai, accepted the Guard of Honour.

Rev.Fr. Charles Stephen, in his Independence Day message said that as a country we need to improve a lot. Though the country is free and developed, still there is poverty and corruption across the nation. There is no safety for women. Therefore real freedom is when we have equality and every one contributes to the growth of the nation. Rev. Fr. Vincent Maria Pragasam in his Independence Day message urged the audience to recall the struggle of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation, in fetching us this most cherished freedom. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by CUO C. Gunasekaran.

The 75th Independence Day was further a red letter day for Sacred Heart College, as it witnessed the blessing and inauguration of Carlo’s Media Center, in AKRC, a much awaited facility. It was followed by the Inauguration of Dr. Ambedkar Gallery, an open classroom and a renovated Meteorological Observatory in the M.S.W premises.
