The Direct PhD program in Social Work aims to enable scholars with minimum five year experience in the field of social work to pursue academic study towards a doctorate. Two broad forms are available for the Direct PhD program in Social Work, Thesis and Practicum. The PhD thesis is the traditional route with the traditional purpose of providing what is essentially the professional training and credential to be an academic or professional researcher. The PhD field practicum is the alternative route founded on processes of thoughtful action, leading to advances in practice. Scholars can opt for either of the routes. However, scholars who have not undertaken any pre-doctoral course work, may be required to undertake one semester of compulsory course work, as prescribed by the selection committee and competent authorities in addition to the mandatory modular course work. The School seeks to keep the programme flexible without giving up on the academic rigour necessary for Ph.D. research
