The Don Bosco Social Action and Research Centre (DBSARC), Don Bosco Siharam, Tiruvannamalai, in collaboration with the Department of Extension Education and Services, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur, conducted a one-day training program on substance abuse on 24th November 2024 at the DEEDS, DB Centre, Tirupattur. The program, aimed at educating and empowering youth from the Irular, Thurumbar, and Gypsy communities by raising awareness about substance abuse and providing practical tools for resilience and personal development.

The program began at 10:30 AM with a welcome address and the honoring of the chief guest, Rev. Dr. Shanmugam SDB, Director, DB Centre. He spoke about the importance of initiatives like this to combat substance abuse among vulnerable communities.Mr. Moses, Project Coordinator of DBSARC, delivered an engaging orientation session at 10:40 AM. He outlined the program objectives, including the focus on building resilience and providing vocational guidance to empower youth. Mr. Moses highlighted the role of the DBSARC in addressing social issues and promoting community development. At 11:00 AM, Dr. Prabu, from the Department of Tamil, Sacred Heart College, conducted the first session on “Creating Awareness on Substance Abuse for Targeted Youth Groups from Irular, Thurumbar, and Gypsy Communities”. Dr. Prabu provided a detailed explanation of the causes and effects of substance abuse.

At 12:30 PM, Mr. Benjamin representing the Folk Group from Villupuram, performed a captivating folk art session titled “Awareness Creating on Human Rights Through Folk Group”. The program concluded at 1:20 PM with closing remarks by Mr. Moses. A group photo was taken to mark the successful completion of the event. The day ended with lunch served to all participants at 1:30 PM. The following were the outcome of the programme. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the dangers of substance abuse and its societal impacts.The folk art session inspired participants to take pride in their cultural heritage and use it as a source of strength. Practical strategies for resilience and self-reliance were shared, encouraging youth to adopt healthier habits and explore vocational opportunities. The program fostered a sense of unity and encouraged participants to rely on community-based support systems.
