As part of the internship programme organized by the PG and Research Department of Physics at Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur, Internship students had the valuable opportunity to gain extensive exposure to practical research methodologies and advanced laboratory techniques. Open to participants from various institutions, the programme focused on contemporary research areas in material science, including nanoparticle synthesis, crystal growth, and green synthesis. The interns received hands-on training in material synthesis, where they learned different preparation techniques, the importance of experimental conditions, and safe chemical handling practices. For a nominal fee of ₹1000, they were given full access to the department’s laboratories, advanced instrumentation, and essential research facilities.
One of the key highlights of the internship was the detailed training provided on modern characterization techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), where students explored crystal structure determination and crystallite size analysis; Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-VIS) Spectroscopy, which offered insights into optical properties; and Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, which enabled them to study molecular vibrations and functional groups. These sessions enhanced their skills in data interpretation, scientific analysis, and report preparation. Throughout the programme, the students worked under the close supervision of experienced faculty members who provided regular guidance and feedback to ensure adherence to good laboratory practices. They were also encouraged to maintain detailed documentation of their procedures and findings, helping them to develop disciplined research habits. This internship experience played a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic concepts and real-world research applications, significantly enhancing the students’ technical abilities, research aptitude, and confidence to pursue further studies and careers in material science. A total of 51 students from seven different colleges/institutions attended the internship programme during May–June 2025.
