The Department of Extension Education and Services at Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur, in collaboration with the District Forest Office, A.K. Mottur Panchayat, Indian Institute of Public Administration (Tirupattur Branch), and various local NGOs, organized a Sapling Plantation Programme on the 28th of August 2024. The event also saw active participation from Youth for Social Responsibility (YSR), Eco Club, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Youth Red Cross (YRC), and the Department of Commerce (CA).
Rev. Dr. Samson Shanmugam, Director of the Department of Extension Education and Services & Vice-Principal (Administration) Shift-II, delivered the welcome speech. He extended a warm welcome to the guests, participants, and villagers, emphasizing the significance of tree planting in mitigating environmental challenges and fostering a greener future. The ceremonial lighting of the Kuthuvilakku was performed by the Chief Guest, Mr. Mahendran, District Forest Officer of Tirupattur Division.
Mr. Mahendran, an alumnus of Sacred Heart College, delivered an inspiring keynote address. He spoke passionately about the importance of planting saplings and nurturing them to maturity as a crucial step in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. He highlighted the role of youth and educational institutions in leading such green initiatives and commended the college for its continued commitment to environmental stewardship. The event was graced by several other dignitaries, including: Mr. Radhakrishnan, Assistant District Forest Officer, Mr. Sozharajan, Ranger, Tirupattur, Mr. Subramanian, Chairman, Indian Institute of Public Administration, Tirupattur Branch, Rtn. Velu, President, A.K. Mottur Panchayat, Mr. Radhakrishnan, Social Activist.
Mr. Mahendran initiated the plantation activity by planting the first tree, setting an example for the students and other participants. Following his lead, students and members of the participating organizations planted a total of 1,000 saplings across the village. The programme concluded with Mr. Mahendran expressing his gratitude towards the Department of Extension Education and Services at Sacred Heart College for their pivotal role in organizing the event.
