The Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Theoretical Foundations and Emerging Horizons of Quantum Computing, jointly organized by the PG and Research Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer Science, was inaugurated by Rev. Dr. Praveen Peter, Rector and Secretary, on 18th August 2025 at 6:00 pm. In his address, he highlighted the importance of learning quantum computing and encouraged the participants to make the most of the programme. Dr. A. George Maria Selvam, Head (PG), Department of Mathematics, welcomed the gathering.
Programme Highlights
- Day 1 (18th August):
Dr. Shailesh Sivan, Cochin University of Science and Technology, laid the foundation for quantum computing through an in-depth session on linear algebra, providing the essential mathematical background.
- Day 2 (19th August):
Professor F. Sagayaraj Francis, Puducherry Technological University, gave a comprehensive overview of the current state of quantum computing, supplemented with live demonstrations using online resources.
- Day 3 (20th August):
Dr. N. S. Sreekanth, Kannur University, explained the differences between classical and quantum computing, illustrating the vast parallelism possible in quantum systems with simple, relatable examples.
- Day 4 (21st August):
Dr. Manjula Gandhi, Coimbatore Institute of Technology, presented detailed insights on quantum gates and circuits, supported by demonstrations using IBM Qiskit. She also shared valuable online resources for learning and practicing qubits.
- Day 5 (22nd August):
Dr. R. K. Sunil Kumar, Kannur University, explored the creative applications of Fourier Transform techniques in quantum computing. His associate, Mr. Sanal, demonstrated practical implementations through Google Colab.
The FDP concluded with a valedictory address by Dr. D. Maria Antony Raj, Principal, who encouraged participants to draw life lessons from the principles of quantum computing. Mr. John Arockiaraj, Head, Department of Computer Science, delivered the vote of thanks.
The programme witnessed the active participation of 135 members from 25 colleges and universities across India, including 55 faculty members, 18 research scholars, and 62 postgraduate students.
