The World Ozone Day Awareness Program was organized to commemorate the United Nations’ observance of World Ozone Day on September 16, under the global theme “From Science to Global Action.” The initiative aimed to educate students on the significance of the ozone layer, the science behind its protection, and global efforts to prevent its depletion.
The session was presided over by Mr. N. Madhavan, President of the Media Forum Association, who emphasized the importance of environmental awareness and youth participation in global sustainability efforts. The program featured a series of presentations and interactive discussions on the types of UV rays—UVA, UVB, and UVC—and the consequences of ozone depletion, such as increased health risks, ecological imbalance, and agricultural decline. He highlighted the causes of depletion, notably the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other ozone-depleting substances and emphasized the importance of international cooperation through the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol. The address also acknowledged India’s proactive measures, including the early phase-out of CFCs, the implementation of the India Cooling Action Plan, and technician training programs. As a symbolic gesture of environmental commitment, the students initiated a sapling-planting drive, reinforcing the message of ecological stewardship in the community.
The awareness program successfully fulfilled its academic and social objectives by contextualizing ozone layer protection within the framework of scientific inquiry and global cooperation. The session concluded with the resonant message: “Save Ozone, Save Earth, Save Ourselves.”
