Sacred Heart College (Autonomous) in Tirupattur organized a vibrant celebration titled "Pongal Thiruvizha 2026" (Shift-2) on January 13, 2026. The event took place at the college grounds from 2:45 PM to 5:00 PM, bringing together students and faculty to honour Tamil culture and traditions. The festivities commenced with the traditional lighting of the fire for the Pongal pot, symbolizing prosperity and the beginning of the harvest season. Then Mr. Chakravarthy performed his Traditional Parai Attam. The college management honoured Mr.Chakravarthy with award titled “Kalai Valamani Virudhu” for the extraordinary contribution to the Tamil Cultural Dance Paraiattam. Dr. J. Jayachitra, Professor of the Tamil Department, delivered the introductory address, explaining the significance and objectives of the celebration. This was followed by a traditional Pongal dance that set a high-spirited tone for the celebration. Special Pongal greetings and blessings were offered by Rev. Dr. Praveen Peter, Rector and Secretary and Rev. Dr. Theophil Anand, Additional Principal, who emphasized the Tamil culture.
The event featured a wide array of competitions specifically designed for both male and female students. Male students participated in traditional games like Kolam (Rangoli), Tug of War, Kabaddi, and the Three-Legged Race. Meanwhile, female students showcased their skills in Uriyadi (breaking the pot), Tug of War, Lemon and Spoon race, and Balloon Bursting. Beyond these competitions, general events included the collective cooking of Pongal by both male and female students, fostering a sense of unity. The cultural segment was enriched by solo folk song performances and a unique musical presentation titled "Bombing in the City." The program concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. R. Raja from the Tamil Department. Dr. M. Vidya served as the master of ceremonies, coordinating the transitions between the various segments. Finally, the celebration ended on a high note with the Distribution of Prizes to the winners of the various competitions. The entire event, spearheaded by Dr. Shanmugam and the college administration, successfully preserved and promoted the rich heritage of the Pongal festival.
