Sacred Heart College
The Department of Physics, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur, organised a Professional Development Workshop for Physics Teachers on 19 August 2026 at the DMT Hall. The workshop was organised with the twin objectives of enhancing the teaching and learning of Physics through experimental and activity-based approaches and creating awareness among teachers about the diverse career opportunities available to students pursuing Physics at the undergraduate level.
The programme commenced with a prayer song, followed by the Welcome Address delivered by Rev. Dr. G. Theophil Anand, SDB, Additional Principal, who warmly welcomed the dignitaries and participants. In his address, he highlighted the importance of experimental learning in Physics education and emphasised the need for innovative approaches to make the subject more engaging, meaningful, and relevant to students.
The inaugural function was graced by the presence of Rev. Fr. Stanley Lawrence Ignatius, SDB, Rector, and Rev. Dr. Praveen Peter, SDB, Principal, Sacred Heart College, Tirupattur. Mr. R. Punniyakotti, Chief Educational Officer, Tirupattur. They emphasised the vital role of teachers in shaping young minds and encouraged the participants to adopt innovative, experimental, and student-centred teaching methods to enhance the learning experience of students.
The dignitaries were felicitated, followed by the presentation of the Dynamics of the Day by Dr. M. Jose, PG Head, who outlined the various sessions and activities planned for the workshop. The inaugural programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. C. Thirupathi, UG Head, Shift II, marking a meaningful and inspiring beginning to the workshop.
The workshop featured three enriching invited sessions. Rev. Dr. Joe Anand, SDB, Director, Don Bosco Vazhikaati, Chennai, and a professional trainer, delivered the first session entitled “Beyond B.Sc. Physics: Mapping Higher Education, Careers and Emerging Opportunities.” The session provided valuable insights into the various higher education and career pathways available to Physics graduates and highlighted emerging opportunities in diverse fields.
The second session was delivered by Mr. M. Sanjeevkumar, Senior Manager, Deloitte, Australia, on “Worldwide Opportunities for the Students of Physics in Areas Other than Physics.” The session broadened the participants’ perspectives by highlighting the diverse career opportunities available to Physics graduates in technology and other emerging industries beyond the conventional domains of Physics.
The third session was again led by Rev. Dr. Joe Anand, SDB, who spoke on “From Classroom to Career: Preparing Physics Students for the Future of Work.” The session emphasised the importance of developing relevant skills, adaptability, problem-solving abilities, and career readiness among students to meet the evolving demands of the professional world.
The Valedictory Function of the workshop was held at the Mahatma Gandhi Hall. The programme commenced with a prayer song, followed by the Welcome Address delivered by Dr. A. Dhayal Raj, Research Head. Rev. Dr. G. Theophil Anand, SDB, Additional Principal, delivered a special message during the function. The participants then shared their feedback and experiences, expressing their appreciation for the insightful sessions and the valuable learning opportunities provided through the programme. Their feedback was highly encouraging and reflected their appreciation for the efforts taken by the Department of Physics in organising such a meaningful and enriching professional development programme. The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. M. Jose, Programme Organiser, marking the successful completion of the workshop. A group photograph with the Rector, Principal, Additional Principal, organisers, and participants was also taken, providing a memorable conclusion to the day’s activities.
A total of 87 postgraduate assistants and teachers from Government and Government-aided schools across Tirupattur District participated in the workshop. Notably, 32 of the participants were alumni of Sacred Heart College, reflecting the strong and enduring bond between the institution and its alumni.
